Types of Care for the Elderly

There are various types of facilities that give care to the elderly. For those who are thinking about putting their elderly loved ones in these homes, it is essential to know what are the different types of care homes available. It is important to know which facility will be able to give the best care to one’s loved one since they are all different.

Here are the different types of care available for the elderly:

Nursing homes

These homes are known to give the maximum type of care for the elderly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These homes have registered nurses who are professionals in giving the needed medical care to those who need it. These facilities are the best for those who cannot look after themselves anymore and need to be monitored continuously. The nursing homes also have their own specialties, so families have to check which ones offer the services or amount of care that their loved ones need.

Retirement homes

There are two types of retirement homes for the elderly: sheltered housing and assisted living. These homes are meant to give the elderly a sense of independence, but when the need for care arises, they will immediately receive it. Sheltered housing may be done in a community, where there are various activities in store for the elderly. As for assisted living, there are also three types, categorized according to the amount of care needed.

Residential care homes

Residential homes are those that do not give the elderly around-the-clock care. The health care assistants will only be helping out during certain times of the day for various medical needs.

Convalescent and Respite Care

There are various homes that offer temporary rooms for the people. Respite care is more focused on giving the ones giving care (such as family members) a time to recuperate. Since these people also get tired, they have to take a break at times. For those who are convalescing from an operation, extra care is needed. Homes that offer convalescent care are the best places where the patients could recuperate.

Home Care

The main advantage of having this type of care is that the people could still live in their homes and not have to move away. Care providers will be visiting the patient’s houses instead, to give the appropriate care as well as address the different concerns of the patient. The various services could also be arranged, such as physiotherapy in the comfort of their own homes.
